We’ll kick things off with a community stage! Sign up at the door starting at 7:30. Please keep what you share to 1 poem or maximum 5 minutes, out of respect for the space you share with the community. Our feature is the incredibly talented Nisha Patel!
Nisha Patel is an Indo-Canadian spoken word poetry author, artist, public speaker, and writer in Edmonton, Alberta. She is the 2016 Edmonton Indie Slam Champion, and took 4th place in the finals of Canadian Individual Poetry Slam 2017. She is a three-time member of the Edmonton Slam Team, finishing as a semi-finalist in 2016, and taking 3rd place with the team in 2017 at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. Her work has been published in a collection of poems called “Water” and her solo chapbook “Limited Success”. She has performed across Canada at the Saskatchewan Festival of Words, Verses Festival of Words, Next Fest, and Heart of the City Festivals, and recently finished a European tour. Her work speaks to themes of race & feminism, mental illness, and identity, and focuses strongly on her struggles and triumphs as a woman of colour. She has worked with youth poets, adults, and students through storytelling and poetry workshops, and in 2016 gave a TEDxUAlberta talk discussing the intersections between poetry and politics. She is currently working on a book of poetry through Glass Buffalo Publishing.
