Renowned for their cross-genre experimentalism, unabashedly unique, WHOOP-Szo is a wild fusion of folk, metal, pop, grunge, and even classical musical stylings. Though radically diverse in tone, WHOOP-Szo has crafted their many sounds well, and are able to create immersive musical tapestries that evoke deep emotions while conveying troubling stories of civil unrest via layered harmonies, churning guitar, gritty synth, and a whole psychedelic plethora of other noise.

Music aside, WHOOP-Szo is well known for the boundaries that they have bridged between social work, activism, and music making, not only in their hometown of London, Ontario, but also in various communities across Turtle Island. As a band fronted by an indigenous artist, album and song themes often focus on issues like colonization, language, self-determination, and appropriation. Outreach feats include the creation of an Inuit Youth silkscreen apprenticeship program in Salluit, QC and workshops on Solidarity Through Art in Kingsclear First Nation, NB amongst others.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The Avulsions’ highly anticipated debut album Expanding Program launches the Saskatoon group’s gothic post-punk into a sci-fi dystopian future that may not be far off. Songs uncoil slowly while patiently working through hypnotic passages. Shards of spindly guitar and synth work alternate between chilly, dread-inducing backdrops and regal orchestral-style arrangements, all pinned down by distinctive percussion that rarely relies on a familiar beat. On these slow-burning mini-epics, spectral ambience inspired by The Cure is fused with the chiming dissonance of early Sonic Youth, the deadpan drama of Nico’s The Marble Index, and the nuclear war paranoia of This Heat. The album’s morbid lyrics conjure a society of “Mars” under military control, lingering evil in the Twin Peaks referencing “BOB”, and the scorched earth of “The End” eliminating all suffering forever — before the explosive release of 12-minute closer “Clone” returns to a final moment of uncertain calm.

MOSFETT

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
MOSFETT is a lil rock n’ roll band from Vancouver, combining the essential elements of pop hooks, doomy sludge riffs, long hair and leather.

Formerly Hemogoblin, MOSFETT is a 3 piece band blending punk, grunge and alternative styles into righteous heavy jams. They urge everyone to be excellent to each other.

Nightshirt aims to bring organizers from across the prairies together to Treaty 6 Territory, in Saskatoon, to showcase music and art, and to build up our community through creative collaboration. Nightshirt takes place June 14-17 at Amigos Cantina, Black Cat Tavern, The Underground Cafe, and Elks Lodge.

The Big Fun Festival is an annual, five day music festival showcasing multiple genres of music in several venues in downtown Winnipeg every January. Using Winnipeg’s prairie winter as the backdrop, the festival showcases the best of Manitoba’s current and upcoming artists as well as some hand picked acts from across Canada.

Manitoba maintains a reputation for having a rich artistic community as well as a bitter winter. The Big Fun Festival brings these two elements of our Province together to create an annual festival their city can be proud of.
